PORVORIM: Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar today heard final arguments on disqualification petition filed by Congress leader Girish Chodankar against 8 MLAs.
As per information, the Speaker has granted parties time till Monday to submit written arguments.
The disqualification petition filed by former Congress leader Girish Chodankar targets eight MLAs who defected from Congress to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP0 on September 14, 2022 claiming merger of two-third as per the Tenth Schedule of Anti-defection Act.
The Speaker has issued notices to the petitioner and eight MLAs, asking them to appear either in person or through their advocates on October 14. Chodankar had filed the petition in November 2022, citing violations of anti-defection laws.
In December 2022, the petitioner had moved an application before the Speaker for speedy disposal of his petition as per the Supreme Court order and also filed a writ petition before High Court in January last year seeking directions to the Speaker for time-bound disposal of his petition.
