New Delhi: India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has raised concerns about the impact of rising tensions in West Asia on global energy security, warning that disruptions in key maritime regions can directly affect the supply of oil and gas.
Speaking at the Maritime Conclave “Sagar Sankalp,” Singh pointed to the evolving geopolitical landscape and the increasing strategic importance of oceans. Referring to the ongoing tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel, he said the current situation reflects a broader shift in global power dynamics and uncertainties in international relations.
According to Singh, seas were traditionally viewed primarily as channels for trade and commerce. However, the situation has changed significantly in recent years, with maritime regions becoming centres of strategic competition and geopolitical influence. He noted that global systems and long held assumptions about international order are undergoing major transformations.
Highlighting the current tensions in the Middle East, Singh described the developments as unusual and difficult to predict. He observed that the evolving circumstances in the region could have implications not only for neighbouring areas but also for global stability.
He stressed that maritime regions such as the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf remain vital for the world’s energy supply. Any disruption in these areas can significantly affect the movement of oil and gas, which in turn influences global trade and economic stability.
Singh also expressed concern over increasing competition among nations across land, air and sea, warning that such tensions are gradually becoming a persistent feature of international politics.
Turning to India’s defence preparedness, the minister highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s defence production capabilities. He said several structural and policy reforms have been introduced to improve efficiency, transparency and technological development in the sector.
Special emphasis has been placed on improving financial discipline, performance standards and research and development, particularly in shipbuilding. Singh noted that major defence shipyards, including Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers, are receiving greater focus as part of efforts to build a stronger and more future ready industrial ecosystem for India’s maritime security.
