New Delhi: Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Tuesday to discuss the evolving conflict in West Asia and its growing impact on global energy security. The discussion also focused on strengthening cooperation between India and Sri Lanka in the energy sector and addressing broader regional challenges.
During the call, the two leaders reviewed progress on several initiatives designed to deepen bilateral energy cooperation. The conversation also touched on the importance of close coordination between the two countries as the conflict in West Asia continues to affect global supply chains and economic stability.
The ongoing crisis began after military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28. In response, Iran launched retaliatory attacks targeting Israel and several Gulf nations, further intensifying tensions in the region.
One of the major concerns arising from the conflict has been the disruption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor through which nearly 20 percent of the world’s energy supplies pass. Restrictions on vessel movement in the strategic waterway have affected global energy transport and raised concerns among countries dependent on oil and gas imports.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted that the interruptions in shipping through the Strait of Hormuz are unacceptable and stressed the need for stability in global trade routes. He noted that the crisis has continued for several weeks and is having a significant impact on economies and daily life across many parts of the world.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close cooperation as trusted partners and agreed on the importance of working together to address shared challenges arising from the ongoing geopolitical situation. The conversation also reflected a broader call from the international community for an early resolution to the conflict and restoration of stability in the region.
