PANAJI: A total of 53 wards have been reserved in Five Municipalities- Margao, Sanguem, Quepem, Mormugao and Mapusa, as per the new notification issued by the department of Urban Development.
As per the notification issued on March 15, a total of 34 wards are reserved for women.
Of the total 27 wards reserved for other backward class (OBC), 8 for Scheduled Tribes and 5 for Scheduled caste category, there are women reservations too.
As per notification one ward each for women and OBC increased in all five Municipalities while one ST ward is increased in Quepem, as noted and directed by the Supreme Court.
Total 13 wards are reserved in Margao, which include nine for women.
In Mormugao, of the total 14 wards, nine are reserved for women.
In Mapusa total 11 wards are reserved while in Quepem the reservation is in nine wards and six wards reserved in Sanguem.
The Supreme Court and the High court had pulled up State government over its reservation policy adopted I. These five Municipalities, wherein the mandate of the Constitution was not followed.
The elections in these five Municipalities are currently stalled by the judiciary.
