PANAJI: Stating that democracy allows freedom of expression, absconding former RSS Goa Chief Subhash Velingkar’ today contended before the Court that his remarks on St Francis Xavier were merely a suggestion for confirming identity which in turn will be beneficial for SFX followers
After hearing the arguments, the Additional Sessions Court will pronounce its order on the anticipatory bail petition filed by former RSS Goa chief Subhash Velingkar at 5 pm today.
The court heard arguments in the case, with four intervention petitions filed by various complainants. AAP MLA Cruz Silva, represented by advocate Amit Palekar, along with Benaulim leader Warren Alemao and two others, had filed the intervention petition.
During the hearing, Absconding ex-RSS Goa Chief Subhash Velingkar’s counsel claimed that no offence was made as he only sought a DNA test, and said confirming identity will be useful for all including SFX devotees.
Bicholim Police however opposed the bail plea contending that Velingkar’s malicious act caused law and order tension in Goa, plus he ignored two notices.

The prosecutor argued that malicious acts have sparked statewide law and order concerns in Goa.
Velingkar’s Counsel also said that the police are trying to arrest me under public pressure; this is not democracy; it is mobocracy,”.
Intervenor Cruz Silva’s Counsel said that Subhash Velingkar has offended Catholics with his remarks, so if he is worried about the Rs 400 cr government spending on exposition, he ought to also discuss the Rs 1,000 cr government scams.
Goa police said that Velingkar is “absconding” and raids are being conducted to trace him.
According to the FIR, the accused with “malicious intentions gave maligning speech against St Francis Xavier outraging the religious feelings and insulting religious beliefs of the complainant, entire class of his religion and others”.
