PANAJI: In a bid to protect the marine ecosystem and keep the shore clean, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant today urged Goans not to dispose their waste in rivers and other water bodies.
CM Pramod Sawant, along with Amruta Fadnavis – the wife of Maharashtra Deputy CM and actors Jackie Shroff and Karan Kundrra, flags off the #CleanAThon initiative, a clean-up drive at Miramar Beach in the capital.
“I urge people not to throw their waste in rivers and other water bodies. Many people stop their vehicles on the bridges and dispose their waste into the river. Later the same waste reaches the sea and the waste is flushed back on the shore,” said CM Sawant
He further requested people to keep their waste in a bag next to the road but not throw the same into the water.
Sawant said that his government is working on sewarage system across the coastal belt and we are hopefull that sewage is treated and not just disposed in the sea.
“We are coming up with sewage treatment plants across the coastal belt. In some areas we have already installed these plants,” he said
Chief Minister also said that beaches are the econmic backbone of Goa and tourists will only come if the water and the beaches are clean.
“The message is to keep the beach clean. We always work to keep the coasts of Goa clean, and we will keep it clean in the future too,” Sawant said
Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff who was present for the function said, “I don’t have to come from anywhere to say keep your beaches clean. Don’t litter around,”
“Glad that a lot of people have turned up. We come to Goa, shoot & take away the best memories. This is reality of maintaining that beauty, we are doing everything,”said actor Karan Kundrra
The clean-a-thon will continue at multiple places by the volunteers of the Divyaj and Bhamla Foundations in association with volunteers from Government of Goa. This clean up drive which is being organized on the sidelines of IFFI aims to make the entire coastline of Goa pristine again.
