PANAJI: The Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) yesterday in a ground breaking surgery retrieved and transplanted organs from a 62 year old brain dead woman.
A 62-year-old woman admitted for subarachnoid haemorrhage, after a clinical diagnosis, was declared brain dead.
Addressing the media, Rane said ,”In its continued efforts to save lives has conducted yet another successful case of Organ Retrieval & Transplant from a Brain Dead Donor under the Deceased Donor Transplant Programme of SOTTO Goa,”
He said, “A 62-year-old woman admitted for subarachnoid haemorrhage, after a clinical diagnosis, was declared brain dead. Her family stepped forward & requested for organ donation of the deceased. Their gesture has saved 3 precious lives,”
He further said that this was the second organ harvesting done by the GMC under SOTTO programme.
GMC Dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar said that the kidneys, which were harvested, were transplanted to the registered patients under the Kidney Transplant Programme of SOTTO Goa and the liver was allocated to Ahmedabad.
“The waiting list in Goa was 8 but now with this two kidneys transplanted the waiting is down to 6. The patients to whom the kidneys are transplanted are not getting stabilised and it take around 36-48 hours for the stabilisation,” said GMC Dean
In December 2020, GMC under its SOTTO programme, had harvested 5 organs two kidneys, liver, heart and lungs from a 21-year-old man who was declared brain dead.
SOTTO was established in Goa, a registry allowing patients in need of transplants to register themselves on waiting lists. The registry had been launched last December.
GMC, Healthway Hospital and Manipal Hospital are registered with SOTTO, according to Goa SOTTO office joint director Dr Preeti Varghese.
