PANAJI: The recent compromise between Assagao house owner Prinsha Agarwadekar and land owner Pooja Sharma has caused discontent among activists and lawyers in the State.
Rama Kankonkar, an activist, expressed concern, stating, “The Chief Minister’s assurance of arresting those involved holds significance. It seems that compromises are being made after receiving money, which is not unprecedented. This situation is creating fear and uncertainty for us.”
Similarly, Walter Lobo, an activist from Calangute, voiced skepticism, saying, “We are unaware of the terms of the compromise. The involvement of a high-ranking officer and allegations of kidnapping make it imperative that the case not be withdrawn. What is happening in this State?”
Adding to the dissent, activist Xencor Polgi remarked, “This sets a troubling precedent. All individuals who have taken the law into their own hands should be held accountable. The withdrawal of the case and the release of the accused should not be permitted.”
Tanoj Adwalpalkar, another activist, emphasized, “This incident indicates that anyone can demolish another person’s house without consequences. It is evident that the public is aggrieved. The law should be applied uniformly, and the primary wrongdoer must face legal action.”
Additionally, Rajan Ghate stressed the need to understand the reasons behind the family’s decision to reach a compromise, hinting at potential pressure from influential figures involved in the situation.
The discontent and concerns raised by these activists reflect a lack of confidence in the legal proceedings and the need for transparency and accountability in the case.
