MARGAO: Goa Forward Party (GFP) President Vijai Sardesai today appealed to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant-led state government not to make Goan farmers beg for their compensation.
“Our farmers are proud, hardworking Goemkars. don’t make them be. Pramod Sawant, who spent 6CR of public money on his 18-minute swearing-in has been withholding crop loss compensation to farmers since 2019,” said Vijai.
He further urged the Chief Minister to treat the farmers with dignity and requested him to settle their dues before the festival of Diwali.
However, a large number of farmers are still to receive compensation, and there have been growing demands for early compensation as any delay in compensation would demotivate farmers from pursuing farming and agriculture activity.
The agriculture department had done its work to assess the losses and submit claims of farmers who suffered losses due to cyclone Tauktae but is reportedly yet to compensate due to procedural delay as the fund is expected to be received from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF).
The cyclone on May 16 destroyed crops and cultivations across the State and the Zonal Agriculture Offices (ZAOs) in all talukas were directed to report the losses to the agriculture department.
