PANAJI: Director General of Police (DGP) Goa Jaspal Singh IPS today appealed to citizens not to make social media platforms ‘unsocial’ by posting derogatory posts about individuals, groups, sects, creeds, and religions.
“Please don’t make it ‘unsocial’ by posting derogatory posts about individuals, groups, sects, creeds, and religions. Learn to respect each other. No disharmony, please,” said Singh.
He further said that social media is a digital invention of the civilized world to spread information, knowledge, and interactions.
A 29-year-old boy was taken into custody by the Mapusa police for allegedly making disparaging remarks about Devi Lairai on social media. Aryan Salgaonkar has been identified as the accused.
Amit Anant Gaonkar, of Manswado, Shirgao, Bicholim, allegedly filed a complaint at the Mapusa Police Station, and a case was filed there under the IPC’s sections 153, 153-A, 295-A, 208, 500, and 34.
After assembling a team, the police were able to identify the suspect and place him under arrest in a matter of hours after the case was filed.
According to the police, the accused’s mobile phone is attached.
In the meantime, the Mapusa Police Station was keeping a close eye on a Mapusa girl who had committed an earlier crime and made disparaging remarks on social media.
She filed a request for relief with the Sessions Court, and on May 28, 2024, the court granted her temporary relief. The girl’s arrest has not been ordered by the police.
