New Delhi: India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has brushed aside concerns over his recent dip in form, making it clear that he has no intention of altering the batting approach that has defined his success over the past few years. Speaking ahead of the opening T20 International against New Zealand on Wednesday, the right handed batter struck a confident note and expressed belief that runs will come with persistence and continued hard work.
Suryakumar endured a difficult phase in T20I cricket during 2025, managing just 218 runs across 19 innings in 21 matches. He failed to register a single half century during the period, with his highest score being an unbeaten 47. Despite the modest numbers, the Indian skipper maintained that his preparations in training have been encouraging and that form is only a matter of time.
He emphasised that every match in a bilateral series carries importance and provides learning opportunities. According to him, strong performances in practice sessions have reinforced his belief in sticking to his natural style of play. He stated that changing his identity at the crease is not an option, as the same approach has brought him consistent success over the last three to four years. He added that if results do not follow, he is prepared to reassess, return to training with renewed focus and come back stronger.
Alongside addressing his own form, Suryakumar also spoke about the absence of key players Tilak Varma and Washington Sundar, both ruled out due to injuries. He acknowledged that their absence would be felt, noting their valuable contributions to the team whenever they have featured in the T20 format. However, he underlined that injuries are an unavoidable part of a sportsperson’s career and beyond anyone’s control.
The captain highlighted that such situations open doors for other players to step in and prove themselves at the international level. He stressed that the team would continue to move forward by backing those who get opportunities in place of the injured players. Wishing the replacements well, Suryakumar reiterated his confidence in the squad’s depth and adaptability as India begins the T20I series against New Zealand.
