CAVELOSSIM: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has blocked around 6 lakh mobile handsets linked to fraudulent or suspicious activities across India over the last two years, officials disclosed at the Annual West Zone Conference on telecom security held in Goa on Tuesday.
The conference, organised by Maharashtra LSA and the Director General Telecom HQs at Holiday Inn Resort, Mobor Beach, brought together over 100 participants, including senior DoT officers, central law enforcement agencies, state police, telecom service providers, banks, and digital payment platforms.
Officials said the crackdown followed the launch of the Sanchar Saathi portal and mobile app in 2023, which enable citizens to report lost or misused connections and trace fraudulent numbers. In May 2025, DoT also rolled out a Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) to classify mobile numbers into low, medium, and high risk categories, helping financial institutions take preventive action.
Telecom security challenges such as impersonation, cyber fraud, spam, and misuse of international call routing were also discussed at the event, which featured case studies, panel discussions, and sessions on digital intelligence, cyber police portals, and supply chain security.
DoT officials said the measures are aimed at making India’s telecom networks more secure, transparent, and resilient against misuse.
