PANAJI: Goa’s Sandhya Melasheemi delivered an outstanding performance at the Yonex Sunrise 48th Indian Masters Veteran National Badminton Championships held in Navelim, emerging as one of the tournament’s brightest stars. Competing in the Women’s 40+ category, the former Goa State champion and international medalist secured a remarkable double crown, showcasing skill, determination, and consistency throughout the competition.
Melasheemi first claimed the Women’s Singles 40+ title after a thrilling three game contest against Smarika Manhas of Karnataka. The final proved to be an intense battle, with Melasheemi edging the opening game 21-19 before dropping the second 13-21. Regaining control in the decisive game, she produced a commanding display to seal the match 21-11 and capture the national title.
She continued her impressive run in the Women’s Doubles 40+ event, partnering Radhika Madhur Ingalhalikar of Maharashtra. The pair displayed strong coordination and attacking play in the final, defeating Lalduhzuali of Mizoram and Prathana Thapa of Nagaland in straight games 21-18, 21-13. The victory capped a memorable campaign for Melasheemi and brought pride to the host state.
The championship also witnessed several other standout performances across multiple age groups. Swati Sharma of Uttarakhand achieved a double triumph by winning both the Women’s Singles 35+ and Women’s Doubles 35+ titles. Mohamed Rehan R. from Tamil Nadu also secured two titles, emerging victorious in the Men’s Doubles 35 and Mixed Doubles 35+ categories.
In the Men’s Singles 40+ event, Harshad Bhagwat of Maharashtra claimed the title, while Mayank Behal and Manish Rawat lifted the Men’s Doubles crown in the same age group. The 50+ category saw India international Jaison Xavier from Kerala dominate the Men’s Singles event. Pradeep Kumar K.S. of Kerala also completed a double by winning both the Mixed Doubles 50 and Men’s Doubles 50 titles.
Additional highlights included Pooja Mehta of Gujarat winning the Women’s Singles 45+ title and Arup Baidya of West Bengal securing the Mixed Doubles 45+ crown. The championship concluded with impressive displays across the 35+ to 50+ categories, celebrating the enduring competitive spirit of veteran badminton players.
