Panaji: In a swift and coordinated rescue operation, Drishti Marine lifesavers saved a fisherman from drowning after he was swept nearly 150 meters out to sea by strong currents off the Mobor beach on Sunday, June 22.
The incident occurred when a group of around 20 to 25 fishermen were swimming near the rocks at Mobor. During the activity, one fisherman was pulled into deeper waters by the strong monsoon-driven currents and found himself unable to return to shore. His companions immediately alerted lifesaver Mega Velip, who wasted no time in notifying the Drishti team stationed at the Mobor watchtower.
Reacting promptly, two jetskis — one each from the Mobor and Cavelossim beaches — were deployed for the rescue mission. Lifesavers quickly located the distressed fisherman approximately 150 meters from the shoreline. Lifesaver Lavu Gaonkar, operating one of the jetskis, successfully reached the victim and brought him back to the shore.
Upon arrival at the Mobor watchtower, the fisherman was found to be experiencing breathing difficulties. Lifesavers placed him in the recovery position and administered oxygen to stabilize him. He was later handed over to the 108 ambulance team and shifted to a hospital in Margao, where his condition is reported to be stable.
Authorities have once again urged the public to refrain from swimming during the ongoing monsoon season, as the sea remains rough and unpredictable, making it dangerous even for experienced swimmers and fishermen.
