PANAJI: With sea swimming restricted during the monsoon season, more than 450 Drishti Marine lifesavers are undergoing their annual refresher training across Goa to sharpen emergency response, fitness, and soft skills.
The two-month-long intensive programme, conducted in batches, ensures that while some lifesavers undergo training, others remain deployed on duty to maintain round-the-clock vigilance on Goa’s beaches.
“This year all 450+ lifesavers, including three women, participated in the refresher training. The focus is on updating professional techniques such as CPR, first aid, beach operations, jet ski handling, and the use of rescue equipment,” said Colonel Austin Collaco, General Manager – Operations and Training, Drishti Marine.
The refresher training also includes endurance tests, with lifesavers required to swim 400 metres within 11 minutes. First-aid and CPR modules are given priority, as quick and efficient response can be life-saving in critical moments.
Alongside technical updates, the programme covers communication and soft skills to help lifesavers handle difficult situations with beach visitors.
“Lifesavers were guided on managing high-pressure situations, including dealing with intoxicated or uncooperative individuals and those refusing to exit the water,” Collaco added.
Drishti Marine emphasised that participation in the refresher training is mandatory to maintain certification and eligibility for duty.
Stationed at strategic points across Goa’s coastline, lifesavers remain fully equipped and trained to respond to emergencies, ensuring the safety of all beachgoers.
