QUEPEM: A scooter rider died while his pillion rider sustained grievous injuries after a car allegedly driven under the influence of alcohol rammed into their two-wheeler at Copramoddi, Assolda, on Sunday night.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 10:10 pm based on the complaint filed by HC 4224 Sanjiv Patil of Quepem Police Station. The accused has been identified as Mandeshwar Paiginkar, a resident of Tilamol, Quepem, who was driving a Zen car in a rash and negligent manner.
Police said the accused, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, dashed against an oncoming Jupiter scooter at Copramoddi, Assolda. As a result, the rider Utpal Naik and pillion rider Ashlesh Bhandari, both residents of Dhadem, Sanvordem, sustained grievous injuries.
After the accident, the driver allegedly fled the spot without informing police and without providing medical assistance to the injured. Both victims were shifted to CHC Curchorem for treatment, where Utpal Naik succumbed to his injuries while undergoing medical care.
The injured pillion rider Ashlesh Bhandari was later referred to GMC Bambolim for further treatment.
Further investigation is being carried out by PSI Siddesh Naik of Quepem Police Station.
