MAPUSA: In a shocking case of drunk and reckless driving, a 15-year-old boy sustained grievous injuries after being hit by a car driven under the influence of alcohol in Parra, Bardez.
The accused, identified as Irfan Rijwan Khan (38), a resident of Succoro and Shelpem-Dhuler, Mapusa, has been booked under multiple charges by Mapusa Police.
According to the state complaint filed by Head Constable Mahesh Kauthankar of Mapusa Police Station, the incident occurred on July 12, 2025, at around 7:30 PM. Khan, who was behind the wheel of a car bearing registration GA-03-R-2756, was reportedly driving in a rash and negligent manner under the influence of alcohol while proceeding from Parra toward Saligao.
When Khan reached near the Ganesh Immersion site in Parra, he veered to the extreme right side of the road and collided head-on with a two-wheeler (reg. no. GA-03-BA-9413) ridden by Mr. Snehal Sunil Pednekar, a 15-year-old resident of Sonarbhat, Reis Magos. The impact caused grievous injuries to the teenager.
Shockingly, despite being fully aware of the accident and the serious injuries caused, the accused fled the scene in his vehicle without offering any help to the victim or informing the police. He reportedly drove to a location of his convenience in an apparent attempt to evade arrest and conceal the crime.
The case was registered at 18:51 hrs on July 15, 2025, under relevant sections pertaining to drunken driving, rash and negligent driving, causing grievous hurt, and failure to report an accident. The investigation is being led by HC Mahesh Kauthankar.
Police have assured that strict action will be taken against the accused. Authorities also reminded the public about the grave dangers and legal consequences of drunken driving.
