Panaji: Dubai Royals lifted the trophy in the inaugural World Legends Pro T20 League after defeating Pune Panthers by eight wickets in an impressive final at the 1919 Sportz Stadium in Goa. The Royals produced a composed run chase to overhaul a challenging target and secure a memorable triumph, bringing the curtain down on a highly competitive ten day tournament.
After winning the toss, Pune Panthers elected to bat and began confidently against the Dubai spin attack. Openers Martin Guptill and Upul Tharanga built a strong foundation with a 100 run partnership, scoring freely in the powerplay and middle overs. Tharanga played a steady knock of 55 before Parvez Rasool delivered the first breakthrough. Guptill continued his aggressive approach and reached 62, but leg spinner Piyush Chawla struck twice in quick succession to dismiss him and captain Kieron Pollard.
Veteran all rounder Shane Watson provided a powerful finish, smashing an unbeaten half century off just 24 balls. His late assault propelled Pune Panthers to an imposing total of 195 for four in their allotted 20 overs, leaving Dubai Royals with a demanding chase.
The Royals responded with determination as Manvinder Bisla set the tone with fluent stroke play. Captain Shikhar Dhawan, who enjoyed excellent form throughout the competition, complemented him perfectly and brought up another stylish fifty. Dhawan eventually fell for 64, but Bisla carried on to score 67 and kept the chase firmly on track.
The decisive phase arrived when Samit Patel and Ambati Rayudu combined for a crucial 50 run stand. Their calm approach ensured there were no late nerves as Dubai reached 197 for two in 19 overs to seal victory and become the first ever champions of the league.
The tournament featured 90 renowned cricketers from different nations and delivered high quality contests throughout. Piyush Chawla claimed the Purple Cap with 15 wickets, while Martin Guptill earned the Orange Cap after accumulating 317 runs. The final result confirmed Dubai Royals as worthy winners of a landmark event in Goa’s sporting calendar.
