CANACONA: Due to heavy rains pouring since Wednesday night, rainwater has entered a residential house in the neighbourhood of Canacona’s Ravindra Bhavan at Chaudi early Thursday morning.
Rainwater accumulated on the side of Ravindra Bhavan due to the choked up flood-drain entering the house of one Ulhas Komarpant’s family house as the streams began to overflow elsewhere in the taluka due to constant rains since Wednesday night.
On informing the ward councillor, Ramakant Naik Gaunkar requisitioned a JCB and tried to drain the water blocked due to choked-up flood-drain. However, since the main water channel was blocked and the water flowing through the traditional route could not find a way, the water flowed in the opposite direction and entered the residence of Komarpant. Now, a pond has been formed on the side of Ravindra Bhavan and since the pipes installed near the entrance of Ravindra Bhavan to carry water are also thin which are further blocked due to the accumulation of garbage, the water has accumulated even more. Councilor NaikGaonkar said that if the contractor had taken appropriate measures to drain open for rainwater during the construction of Ravindra Bhavan, the current situation would not have arisen.
Incidentally, Ulhas Komarpant during one of the visits of Arts & Culture Minister Govind Gaude has informed the dangers to flooding his house during rains as the Ravind Bhavan contractor has not taken proper care for the flood drains to operate during rains. According to sources, Minister Gaude had then asked the GSIDC official to get the issue compiled before monsoons.
Naikgaunkar, informed that now, since rainwater is getting stored, it can also give rise to mishaps and mosquito breeding creating a havoc as such in the future, assuring Komarpant that together they will meet and discuss with Canacona MLA and Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar to hold a meeting with the concerned officials and find a solution to this issue.
