New Delhi: India made a commanding start to the opening Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens, reducing the visitors to 144 for 5 by the second session on Day 1. Jasprit Bumrah set the tone with a fiery spell that earned him three wickets, while Kuldeep Yadav struck twice to keep India firmly in control. Tristan Stubbs and Kyle Verreynne were at the crease as South Africa attempted to steady their innings.
The match marks the beginning of a significant two-Test series, with India hosting the reigning World Test Championship winners. South Africa have arrived with a balanced attack, including experienced spinners Senuran Muthusamy, Simon Harmer and Keshav Maharaj, who are expected to challenge the Indian line-up throughout the series.
India are looking to reassert themselves at home following last year’s surprising 3-0 defeat to New Zealand. Although they returned to winning ways against the West Indies, this contest is seen as a key test of the team’s progression under new captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir. Rishabh Pant, back from a foot injury, features as Gill’s deputy.
South Africa began confidently after choosing to bat first, with Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton putting on a 57-run opening stand. Bumrah ended the partnership by removing Rickelton and followed it up with the wicket of Markram. Kuldeep then dismissed captain Temba Bavuma, who departed cheaply. The visitors reached 105 for 3 at lunch before India continued to strike in the afternoon session, including Kuldeep’s dismissal of vice-captain Wiaan Mulder.
Both sides made notable selection calls, with Kagiso Rabada missing out for South Africa and India opting not to include B Sai Sudharsan.
