Panaji: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has identified five additional political parties from Goa for potential removal from its list of Registered Unrecognised Political Parties (RUPPs), as part of an ongoing nationwide effort to clean up the political registry and enhance electoral transparency.
This second phase targets 476 RUPPs across India, following the Commission’s August 9 action that saw 334 parties struck off the rolls, including four Goa-based groups — Goa Nationalist Party, Goa Praja Party, Goemcarancho Otrec Asro, and United Goans Party. The total number of RUPPs has now been reduced from 2,854 to 2,520.
The ECI’s campaign aims to weed out inactive and dormant political outfits that exist solely on paper without genuine political activity or public support. The move is part of a comprehensive strategy to ensure that the electoral process remains transparent and credible.
The process began in June 2025 when the ECI directed the Chief Electoral Officers of states and Union Territories to conduct detailed verification of 345 RUPPs nationwide to assess their compliance with regulatory norms.
The final fate of the five Goa-based parties shortlisted in this latest round of scrutiny remains pending, as the ECI continues its efforts to maintain a clean and efficient political system.
