New Delhi: The Budget Session of Parliament gathered momentum on its second day with the tabling of the Economic Survey of India, a key document that outlines the country’s economic performance, challenges and policy outlook. The session is expected to intensify in the days ahead as preparations build toward the presentation of the Union Budget 2026 in the Lok Sabha on February 1.
Ahead of the proceedings, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the media and underlined the importance of the proposed India European Union free trade agreement. He described the agreement as a major step toward advancing national aspirations and strengthening India’s global economic integration. The Prime Minister highlighted that wider access to European markets would benefit fishermen, farmers, youth, and the services sector, positioning the agreement as part of a broader reform oriented economic strategy.
The Economic Survey, presented annually before the Union Budget, offers a comprehensive assessment of growth trends, fiscal health and emerging risks. It is also closely watched for indications of policy direction and reform priorities that may shape the forthcoming budget proposals. The document is expected to provide insights into how the government plans to navigate global economic uncertainty while sustaining domestic growth and investment.
The upcoming budget will mark a significant milestone, as the Finance Minister prepares to present her ninth consecutive budget, the highest number by any finance minister to date. Expectations are high that the budget will focus on measures to boost economic momentum, encourage private investment, and strengthen resilience across key sectors.
The Budget Session formally began on Wednesday with the President addressing a joint sitting of Parliament. Her address outlined the government’s vision for inclusive development, social justice and the long term objective of building a developed India.
Political differences were evident from the opening day, with opposition parties seeking discussions on specific legislative and procedural issues. The government, however, maintained that these matters would not be taken up during the current session, stating they had already been discussed earlier.
With the Economic Survey now tabled and the Union Budget approaching, Parliament is expected to witness intense debate and scrutiny. Lawmakers are set to closely examine the government’s economic roadmap and policy priorities as the session progresses.
