PANAJI: The Goa Police have filed a detailed chargesheet before the District and Sessions Court, North Goa, in the Rama Kankonkar assault case, naming eight accused who are currently in judicial custody. The chargesheet pertains to Crime No. 125/2025, registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
The case has been chargesheeted under Sections 126(1), 109, 351(3), 238, 111 r/w 3(5) & 61 of the BNS, along with Sections 3(1)(a), 3(1)(r), 3(1)(s) and 3(2)(v) of the SC/ST Act. The investigation was led by DySP Sudesh Naik (SDPO Panaji).
According to the police, the chargesheet spans 1,371 pages, includes 49 witnesses, and lists 32 muddemal items attached during the probe. The chargesheet was filed within the mandated 60-day period, and the police have sought permission from the court to continue further investigation.
North Goa SP Rahul Gupta, IPS, stated that during the investigation, accused Francis Nadar revealed that he and his associates allegedly assaulted Rama Kankonkar using cable wires and smeared cow dung on his face. The assault, police said, was part of a conspiracy motivated by a personal grudge and prior online mockery.
Police further said that accused Zenito Cardozo allegedly coordinated the plan by tracking Kankonkar’s movements and communicating with the group through WhatsApp during the assault.
All eight accused arrested in the case have now been named in the chargesheet and remain in judicial custody.
Further investigation is underway under the supervision of SP North Rahul Gupta, IPS.
