New Delhi: Former United States president Donald Trump has once again claimed that he played a decisive role in stopping a military conflict between India and Pakistan, asserting that his intervention prevented what he described as a potential nuclear war between the two neighbours. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Trump said the situation had escalated rapidly before being brought under control.
Trump claimed that multiple conflicts were resolved during his leadership and placed India and Pakistan among them. He said the confrontation was intensifying, with “eight planes shot down”, and warned that it was close to becoming a much larger war. According to him, his actions helped prevent catastrophic consequences and saved millions of lives. He added that the only major conflict he has not yet been able to resolve is the ongoing Russia Ukraine war.
The remarks refer to the four day military confrontation that followed India’s Operation Sindoor, which was launched after the terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people. Trump has repeatedly claimed that his administration used trade related pressure to force de escalation, stating on several occasions that the crisis was settled within a day due to his involvement.
India has firmly rejected these assertions. New Delhi has consistently maintained that the cessation of hostilities was the result of direct military level communication between the two countries, not third party mediation. According to the Indian position, Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations reached out to his Indian counterpart after sustaining significant damage, following which both sides agreed to stop all firing and military action across land, air and sea from May 10.
Indian officials have underlined that established bilateral mechanisms were used to restore calm and that no external power played a role in the decision. The government has reiterated that matters related to India Pakistan relations are handled directly between the two nations.
During the same interaction, Trump was also questioned about peace efforts related to the Russia Ukraine conflict. He said talks between Moscow and Kyiv were ongoing but acknowledged deep hostility between the two leaders, adding that the conflict remains unresolved.
Separate diplomatic engagements involving American, Russian, Ukrainian and European representatives were described as constructive, with discussions focusing on security guarantees and future peace frameworks. Despite these efforts, the conflict continues, standing in contrast to Trump’s repeated claims of resolving other global crises.
