New Delhi: The Election Commission of India has released the second supplementary electoral roll list in West Bengal as part of the ongoing revision of voter records ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
According to officials, the updated list was published late on Friday night and made available booth wise on the Election Commission’s official website. However, authorities did not disclose details regarding the total number of inclusions or deletions in the latest list.
An official from the commission confirmed that the second list had been uploaded but declined to provide further details. Some sections of the website that contain data on additions and deletions were reportedly inaccessible due to technical issues.
Earlier this week, the poll body had released the first supplementary list of voters marked as “under adjudication”. That release had also drawn criticism from several quarters because specific figures related to deleted names and resolved cases were not publicly shared.
The revision exercise is part of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls being conducted across the state. During the enumeration phase of the process, nearly 58 lakh names were removed from the voter list due to reasons such as death, migration, duplication and cases where voters could not be traced.
As a result, the total number of eligible voters in the state was reduced from an initial estimate of around 7.66 crore to approximately 7.08 crore. Subsequent updates to the rolls, released on February 28, brought the number of valid voters down further to slightly above 7.04 crore, while more than 60 lakh entries remain under judicial scrutiny.
The updated voter rolls come ahead of elections to the 294 member legislative assembly in the state. Voting is scheduled to take place on April 23 and April 29, while the counting of votes will be conducted on May 4.
