PANAJI: Goa Village Panchayat Union (AITUC) workers protested at Azad Maidan, calling for the adoption of the 7th Pay Commission wage scale. Many workers from different local Panchayats around the state attended the demonstration.
The workers of the Panchayat, including clerks, peons, typists, librarians, messenger boys, gardeners, and sweepers, bemoaned the absence of implementation of the 7th Pay Commission pay structure despite multiple appeals, prayers, petitions, and representations to the government and relevant authorities.
They contend that this structure is long overdue and essential to guaranteeing just recompense for their services.
According to the Goa Panchayati Raj Act of 1994 and the 73rd constitutional amendment, Panchayat employees operate as an autonomous body at the grassroots level and play a crucial role in the administrative structure of Goa.
They also said that they feel underappreciated in terms of receiving fair compensation for their varied roles, even though they have been recognised as ‘Common Cadres’ and are transferable within the Taluka Block.
In addition to their broad range of regular responsibilities, Panchayat employees frequently find themselves handling extra work, such as election duties assigned by collectors, monitoring Gramme Sabhas, conducting agricultural and economic surveys, and even fulfilling obligations under the Disaster Management Act—particularly in the wake of the recent Covid-19 pandemic.
