Srinagar: An intense encounter has broken out between security forces and four terrorists in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir. The gunfight, which began in Kulgam, moved into the dense forest areas of Shopian and has been ongoing for over two hours. Army and paramilitary forces engaged the terrorists following an intelligence tip-off.
This confrontation comes on the heels of Operation Sindoor, India’s powerful counterstrike in response to the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 civilians dead. India’s retaliation included targeted airstrikes on terror infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK).
The Indian government has made it clear that any future terror attack will be considered an act of war and will invite a strong and decisive response. In a national address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that Operation Sindoor had set a “new normal” in India’s anti-terror strategy.
“A fitting response will be given to any terrorist attack, on our terms. We will act decisively against the roots of terrorism, including those hiding behind nuclear blackmail,” said PM Modi. He also emphasized that India would not distinguish between terrorist masterminds and the governments that sponsor them.
Highlighting Pakistan’s involvement, the Prime Minister pointed to the presence of senior Pakistani military officials at funerals of the slain terrorists, calling it clear proof of state-sponsored terrorism.
The current escalation follows the May 7 airstrikes by India, which precisely targeted terror camps across the border. Pakistan retaliated with heavy shelling and missile attacks, causing civilian casualties. India’s air defence intercepted most threats, and in response, India struck key Pakistani military installations.
Though a ceasefire was declared on May 10, Indian forces remain on high alert. Officials have warned that any further provocation will be met with force.
