New Delhi: India captain Shubman Gill offered firm support to Rohit Sharma after the senior opener endured a difficult run with the bat during India’s 2–1 ODI series loss to New Zealand, insisting that a few low scores do not reflect a lack of form.
India suffered a historic setback as New Zealand sealed their first ever ODI series victory on Indian soil, completing the feat with a commanding win in the third and final match at the Holkar Cricket Stadium. Rohit’s struggles came under scrutiny after he managed only 61 runs across three innings at an average of 20.33, failing to register a half century in the series. In the decisive match, the opener scored 11 runs off 13 balls while chasing a steep target of 338.
Addressing questions on Rohit’s performance after the match, Gill stressed that the veteran has been batting well over recent months. He pointed out that while Rohit did get starts during the series, converting them into big scores is not always possible. Gill underlined that every batter strives to make their starts count, but consistency in conversion cannot be expected in every series.
The final ODI saw New Zealand post an imposing 337 for 8 after opting to bat first. Daryl Mitchell continued his outstanding form with another century, scoring 137 off 131 deliveries. Glenn Phillips added further momentum with a fluent 106 from 88 balls, while captain Michael Bracewell’s unbeaten late cameo ensured a challenging total. India’s bowlers were led by Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, who claimed three wickets each.
In response, India fought hard but fell short despite a brilliant century from Virat Kohli. Kohli’s 124 off 108 balls anchored the chase, and his 99 run partnership with Harshit Rana, who struck his maiden ODI fifty, briefly kept hopes alive. Nitish Kumar Reddy also contributed with a composed half century, but the Indian batting lineup eventually folded for 296 in 46 overs, handing New Zealand a 41 run victory.
New Zealand’s bowlers delivered a disciplined performance, with Kristian Clarke and Zakary Foulkes picking up three wickets apiece, while Jayden Lennox impressed with a controlled spell.
Despite the series defeat, Gill’s remarks made it clear that the team management remains confident in Rohit’s ability and experience as India look ahead to future challenges.
