CANACONA: Former Congress candidate for the Canacona Assembly constituency, Janardhan Bhandari, has called on aspiring candidates for the 2026 Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) elections to contest under a Jana-Sena panel to jointly challenge the BJP.
Bhandari said the appointment of an administrator to several municipal councils, including Canacona, by the Directorate of Municipal Administration has paved the way for elections in the council. He stated that the upcoming polls provide an opportunity to elect representatives committed to the overall development of the municipal area.
Claiming that Canacona has lagged behind in development, Bhandari alleged that the municipal council has not progressed due to lack of vision and commitment. He said other municipal bodies in Goa are moving towards modernisation, while Canacona continues to remain underdeveloped.
He appealed to opposition-leaning aspirants and like-minded groups to unite under the Jana-Sena banner, stating that contesting separately would divide votes and benefit the BJP. According to him, the proposed panel aims to support “clean, trustworthy and selfless” candidates to strengthen the opposition in the council.
Bhandari further said Jana-Sena has been raising local issues in Canacona and would extend full support to candidates willing to contest against BJP nominees. He added that in wards where suitable candidates are not available, Jana-Sena may field its own workers.
He also invited individuals, political groups and organisations opposed to the BJP to join hands for the municipal elections, stressing that a united opposition is necessary to challenge the ruling party and raise local civic issues in the Canacona Municipal Council.
