New Delhi: India has issued a fresh advisory asking its citizens in Iran to leave the country at the earliest as tensions continue in the region. The Indian Embassy in Tehran urged nationals to exit the country through the routes identified by the mission and remain in close coordination with officials.
In a message shared online, the embassy strongly advised Indian citizens to “expeditiously exit” Iran and cautioned them against approaching any international land border without prior consultation with the embassy. Officials emphasised that citizens must coordinate with the mission before making any travel plans to ensure their safety and smooth evacuation.
The embassy also shared emergency contact numbers and an official email address to assist Indian nationals who may require support or guidance while preparing to leave the country.
The latest advisory came shortly after the United States and Iran announced a two week ceasefire, providing a brief window for de escalation in the ongoing conflict. Earlier, the embassy had issued a separate advisory urging Indians to remain where they were for the next 48 hours and avoid unnecessary movement.
Citizens were also asked to stay indoors, avoid areas near military installations and critical power infrastructure, and refrain from visiting the upper floors of multi storey buildings as a precautionary measure.
The situation escalated after a sharp warning from United States President Donald Trump, who cautioned that severe consequences could follow if Iran failed to comply with a deadline linked to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
At the start of the conflict, official figures indicated that around 9,000 Indian citizens, including a large number of students, were present in Iran. Since then, evacuation efforts have helped nearly 1,800 people return safely to India.
The hostilities began on February 28 following coordinated strikes on Iranian targets by the United States and Israel, which significantly heightened tensions in the region.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts are underway to ease the crisis. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has offered to host discussions between Washington and Tehran in Islamabad on April 10, as both sides explore a possible path toward negotiations and a longer term resolution to the conflict.
