PANAJI: Sherwin Shaw Falcons and Baale Tigers registered impressive victories in the ongoing PGML 5.0 tournament organised by the Panaji Gymkhana, with two contrasting yet entertaining matches played on Sunday at the Panjim Gymkhana Ground in Campal.
In the morning encounter, Sherwin Shaw Falcons edged past Dempo Challengers by three wickets in a high scoring contest that went down to the final over. Batting first, Dempo Challengers put up a formidable total of 193 for 5 in their 20 overs. Vedant Naik led the charge with a blazing 43 off just 16 deliveries, striking six towering sixes. He was well supported by Shailesh, who scored a rapid 38 from 20 balls with a mix of boundaries. Contributions from Aditya Angle and Vishesh Behl further strengthened the innings.
The chase began with pressure firmly on the Falcons, but Tunish Sawkar turned the game on its head with a superb knock of 54 off 22 balls, laced with six fours and three sixes. As wickets fell at regular intervals, Sazu Naik added a valuable 30 from 19 balls, while skipper Iftikhar Agha displayed composure with an unbeaten 28 off 13 deliveries to steer his side home in 19.5 overs. Despite the loss, Dempo Challengers captain Aditya Angle delivered a standout bowling performance, claiming five wickets for 26 runs.
The afternoon match saw Baale Tigers produce a dominant all round display against Manas Mavericks. The Mavericks were bowled out for 138 in 19.3 overs, with Dishank Prabhu Misquin top scoring with a composed 55 off 39 balls. Captain Ajinkya Kudtarkar added 28, but regular wickets stalled the innings. Nilesh Bhonsle was the pick of the Baale Tigers bowlers with figures of 3 for 27.
In reply, Baale Tigers chased the target comfortably, reaching 139 for 4 in 18.3 overs. Sandeep Dahad anchored the innings with a solid 55 off 45 balls, while captain Lakshay Garg played an attacking cameo of 36. Samar Dubhashi and Prasad Patil remained unbeaten to complete the chase without further trouble.
After three matches each, Manas Mavericks continue to lead the standings on net run rate, followed closely by RC Goa, Priority Titans, Baale Tigers and Sherwin Shaw Falcons, all locked on four points. The competition remains tightly poised as the tournament progresses into its crucial phase.
