MAPUSA: A major safety scare unfolded at the Peddem Indoor Stadium after a large section of the false ceiling, installed as part of the National Games renovation works, collapsed onto the concourse late Sunday, leaving debris strewn across the floor.
Though no injuries were reported, the incident has triggered outrage, with Aldona Congress MLA Adv. Carlos Alvares Ferreira demanding a full inquiry and accountability for what he termed “a glaring case of poor quality work and misuse of public money.”
“I am shocked to witness the level of damage here. It was renovated for the National Games, which means it was expected to be of good quality, with significant money spent on it. When money is spent and the structure collapses so soon, it only shows that money was siphoned off, commissions were taken, and the poor quality of work is visible for all to see,” Ferreira said after inspecting the site.
Calling for immediate restoration and strict action against those responsible, Ferreira stressed that the matter went beyond repair. “If it is the contractor’s fault, the cost must be recovered from the contractor. If not, the government must explain where the money has gone,” he demanded.
Highlighting the risk posed to children, parents, and sports enthusiasts who regularly use the stadium, Ferreira warned against a complacent approach. “Imagine if this had happened when someone was present and got injured. You cannot wake up only after an accident. Regular inspections must be carried out,” he cautioned.
The MLA also urged the new Director of Sports, Ajay Gaude, to take stock of the situation and ensure accountability at the earliest.
