LOUTOULIM: The relatives of workers who lost their lives in the recent fire at Vijay Marine Services in Loutolim are pressing the company for immediate compensation and assistance in sending the bodies back to their native states. Among the deceased were two brothers, leaving behind young children and spouses struggling without their main earners.
Family members have demanded that the company provide at least ₹10 lakh per deceased worker and cover the transportation costs of their bodies. They stated that unless these assurances are met, they would not authorize post-mortem examinations or funeral arrangements.
Relatives at the South Goa District Hospital voiced their frustration over the management’s lack of response, noting that they had been waiting in Goa for two days without any commitment from the company. The two brothers were the primary providers for their families, who now face significant financial challenges.
According to the Maina Curtorim police, the post-mortems of the three victims have been delayed, pending the arrival of their family members. The police have also sealed off the shipyard, and operations remain suspended following orders from the Inspector of Factories and Boilers.
This tragedy has highlighted serious concerns regarding workplace safety and the responsibility of companies to ensure the welfare of employees in high-risk industries.
