Lucknow: The Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj has once again proven to be a monumental success, both spiritually and economically. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted the event’s economic prowess by citing the remarkable story of a boatman’s family who earned a staggering Rs 30 crore during the 45-day festival. This achievement underscores the event’s ability to generate substantial income for local businesses and individuals. Moreover, the Maha Kumbh attracted over 66 crore visitors, setting a record for the largest peaceful gathering in the world without any major incidents of crime. The event’s economic impact was felt across various sectors, including hospitality, transportation, and retail.
In the heart of the Maha Kumbh, a family operating 130 boats exemplified the economic benefits of the event. Each boat earned approximately Rs 23 lakh over the 45 days, translating to a daily income of Rs 50,000 to Rs 52,000. This success story refutes allegations of exploitation and showcases the potential for significant financial gains for those involved in the festival. The event itself was marked by flawless law and order management, with over 66 crore devotees participating without any reported cases of harassment, kidnapping, robbery, or murder.
The Maha Kumbh generated a record-breaking Rs 3 lakh crore in economic activity, benefiting sectors such as hotels, food and essentials, and transportation. The government’s investment of Rs 7,500 crore in the event not only facilitated its smooth execution but also contributed to the sustainable development of Prayagraj. This investment included the construction of over 200 widened roads, 14 flyovers, and other infrastructure projects that will benefit the city for years to come. The economic impact of the Maha Kumbh is expected to contribute significantly to India’s GDP growth, projected at 6.5% this year.
The event’s economic benefits were widespread, with the hotel industry generating Rs 40,000 crore, food and daily essentials contributing Rs 33,000 crore, and transportation services earning Rs 1.5 lakh crore. Additionally, religious offerings and donations added to the overall revenue, further solidifying the Maha Kumbh’s status as a major economic driver for Uttar Pradesh.
