Bicholim: Shock and grief spread in Bicholim after a well-known social worker and his son were discovered dead inside their residence at Naiknagar-Borde on Monday evening.
The deceased have been identified as social activist Sanjay Mhapsekar and his son Sanchit Mhapsekar. Their bodies were found inside the same room of the house, prompting police to launch an investigation that continued late into the night.
According to initial information, Sanjay Mhapsekar was found lying on the floor, while his son Sanchit was discovered motionless on a cot in the room.
The incident came to light when Sanjay’s daughter returned home from work and found both of them unresponsive. Alarmed by the scene, she immediately contacted her maternal uncle and informed him about the situation. The uncle rushed to the house and, with assistance from neighbours, entered the premises where they confirmed that both father and son were lying lifeless.
The matter was subsequently reported to the Bicholim Police Station. A 108 ambulance service team also reached the location and, after checking the bodies, declared that both individuals had already died.
Soon after, police personnel arrived at the scene and began preliminary inquiries. On receiving news of the incident, local MLA Dr Chandrakant Shetye visited the spot. Office bearers of the Bicholim BJP Mandal and former MLA Naresh Sawal also reached the residence to assess the situation and console the family.
The investigation is being carried out under the supervision of Police Inspector Vijay Rane. Police teams conducted the inquest proceedings and summoned a forensic unit, which arrived around 9:30 pm to examine the scene and collect evidence.
Sources said a 12-page handwritten note believed to have been written by Sanjay Mhapsekar was recovered from the house. The note reportedly contains certain details and instructions related to the incident, though its full contents are yet to be analysed. People present at the spot also stated that Sanchit had an injury near his mouth and there were signs of bleeding.
After completion of the forensic examination and other formalities, both bodies were later shifted to Goa Medical College and Hospital at Bambolim for post-mortem examination.
Police said the autopsies, scheduled for Tuesday, are expected to help determine the exact cause of death. Meanwhile, MLA Dr Chandrakant Shetye expressed sorrow over the tragic loss and conveyed condolences to the grieving family.
