PANAJI: FC Goa head coach Manolo Márquez was full of praise for his team and the club’s management after the Gaurs secured a dominant 3–0 victory over Jamshedpur FC in the final of the Kalinga Super Cup, lifting their second title in the competition’s history.
With goals from Borja Herrera—who struck twice—and Dejan Dražić, FC Goa not only ended their wait for silverware but also confirmed their return to the continental stage. The win secured their spot in the 2025–26 AFC Champions League Two Preliminary Round, marking their first appearance in Asian competition in four years.
Reflecting on the victory, Márquez expressed his admiration for the unity and professionalism within the club.
“It was a great tournament and a fantastic group. They completely deserve to be champions. We arrived knowing we had to win four games—and we did,” he said during the post-match press conference.
The triumph held added significance as it was FC Goa’s first win over Jamshedpur FC this season, having lost both Indian Super League (ISL) meetings earlier in the campaign. Against a side known for its defensive strength, the Gaurs took control from the outset, with Borja opening the scoring in the 21st minute before unleashing a spectacular long-range strike to double the lead. Dražić’s composed finish in the second half sealed a resounding victory.
Since taking over at the start of the 2023–24 season, Márquez has brought tactical discipline and consistency to the team. FC Goa finished third in his debut ISL season and climbed to second in the 2024–25 league table, though they fell short in the semi-finals both years. This title, therefore, comes as a long-awaited reward for the team’s steady progress.
“In these two seasons, the team has been very competitive—despite having different squads and playing styles. This year, the group is very strong. They’re more than teammates; they’re friends,” Márquez added.
He also acknowledged the challenge posed by Mohun Bagan Super Giant, who pipped FC Goa to the ISL Shield.
“We finished second in the ISL because of a very strong Mohun Bagan side. We lost in the semi-final due to small details. But here in Bhubaneswar, we were determined to win and earn that Asian slot. We played four very good games.”
Márquez went on to highlight the off-field excellence that has made FC Goa stand out in Indian football.
“We are very happy with the trophy, but I am even happier for the entire group—not just the players, but also the staff and everyone involved at the club. I feel, maybe not in terms of titles, but in terms of organisation, FC Goa is the best club in India. For a coach, it’s a dream to work with a team like this because the atmosphere is top.”
Founded in 2014, FC Goa have consistently been among the top-performing clubs in Indian football. Their latest triumph underlines not only their quality on the pitch but also the strong foundation off it—something Márquez believes sets the club apart.
