PERNEM: In a late evening operation on Wednesday, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) of Pernem Taluka conducted an extensive inspection of 19 restaurants and hotels located in the popular coastal areas of Ashwem and Morjim. The surprise raid revealed significant hygiene violations at some establishments, prompting the closure of four kitchens for failing to meet cleanliness standards.
While many restaurants and hotels in the region were found to be operating with satisfactory kitchen conditions, several minor non-compliance issues were noted. These included minor cleanliness lapses, for which owners were issued improvement notices and instructed to take immediate corrective action.
However, the four establishments that were shut down were found to have serious cleanliness concerns. Issues such as broken floor tiles, drainage problems, and inadequate sanitation measures were highlighted by the FDA team. These establishments will not be allowed to resume operations until the required repairs and improvements are made to ensure public health and safety.
An FDA official remarked, “Overall, hygiene levels in the inspected establishments were quite satisfactory. However, the four premises that were shut down will need to address civil issues such as tile repairs and drainage improvements before resuming operations.”
In addition to the inspections in Ashwem and Morjim, the FDA has issued special directives to vendors in Mapusa and the Goa Medical College (GMC) to strictly adhere to sanitary practices. The ongoing inspections form part of a larger effort by the FDA to ensure that food establishments across the region meet the highest standards of hygiene, particularly as the tourism season intensifies.
The FDA’s efforts are aimed at safeguarding public health by ensuring that all food vendors and establishments maintain proper cleanliness standards. The inspections are expected to continue across various other regions in Goa.
