MAPUSA: A disturbing discovery has sparked renewed concern over food safety in Mapusa after a local resident found a feather inside a sealed packet of dates. The consumer promptly reported the matter to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which responded with swift action.
Following the complaint, FDA officials traced the contaminated product to a supplier located in Karaswada, Mapusa. An inspection of the facility revealed serious lapses in hygiene and food safety standards, prompting authorities to shut down the premises immediately and suspend all production until corrective measures are implemented.
In the course of the same operation, FDA teams also targeted unlicensed food vendors in the area. Three roadside stalls were found to be operating without mandatory licenses and in unsanitary conditions. These violations have further highlighted the widespread non-compliance among small eateries and street food vendors in the region.
The enforcement drive is part of an ongoing FDA initiative aimed at tackling unsafe food handling and poor hygiene across Mapusa and nearby areas. Recent inspections have brought to light a number of violations, including the use of banned coloring substances, improper ingredient storage, and the absence of health certification for food handlers. Several establishments were also discovered operating next to open drains and stagnant water, raising serious public health concerns.
In response, the FDA has imposed fines and issued strict warnings, requiring non-compliant businesses to secure the necessary licenses and meet health standards before resuming operations.
FDA officials have reiterated their commitment to strict enforcement and zero tolerance for unsafe food practices. They have also called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or unhygienic food products or establishments, emphasizing that community cooperation is vital for ensuring food safety.
