Panaji: In a determined push to ensure safe and hygienic food for the people of Goa, the state’s Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has intensified inspections across various regions over the past three days. These drives are part of a proactive campaign to tackle food safety violations in the lead-up to the festive season.
On the morning of August 2, FDA teams conducted surprise checks at the Mapusa Bus Stand, where 250 packets of chapatis brought in via interstate buses were detained. Officials flagged the consignment for lack of proper labelling, a key violation under food safety norms. Samples have been collected and sent for quality testing to determine fitness for consumption.
Simultaneously, inspections were carried out at three bakery manufacturing units in Bastora, Bardez. All three units were directed to halt operations immediately after being found operating in unhygienic conditions and flouting several critical safety standards. Violations included the absence of valid sanitary cards, lack of pest control measures, and other non-compliances with FDA regulations.
On August 4, surveillance teams conducted a series of inspections in the St. Inez area of Tiswadi, covering 11 food business premises. Of these, three establishments—Ms Crossroad (Cadbyshake), Ms Zaquis Biryani, and Ms Sarovar—were issued orders to cease operations owing to poor hygiene conditions. Further action included the imposition of a fine of ₹8,000 on Ms Zaquis Biryani for violations observed during the inspection.
Continuing its statewide crackdown, the FDA on August 5 detained 65 kilograms of misbranded mawa, valued at approximately ₹18,200, from a supplier in Margao. Misbranding poses a significant risk to consumer health, especially during festive seasons when the demand for milk-based sweets surges.
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health, stating:
“We are determined to ensure safe and hygienic food for all in Goa. These targeted drives are part of our larger mission to uphold public health and food safety standards. We will continue to take strict action against violators.”
The FDA has announced that random checks and surveillance operations will continue across the state in the coming days, especially at transit points, food manufacturing units, and eateries. The department has also appealed to consumers and vendors to remain vigilant and comply strictly with food safety regulations.
