MAPUSA: In a major crackdown on unsafe food products, officials from the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) destroyed around 250 boxes of ice pops—locally referred to as ‘Pepsi’—at Ekta Nagar in Khorlim.
The frozen treats had been brought into Goa from Maharashtra for local sale but were found to be stored in gross violation of food safety norms.
According to FDA officials, the products were being kept under improper storage conditions, without the required refrigeration, raising serious health and safety concerns.
“The items were transported and stored without maintaining the cold chain, which is essential for such frozen consumables. Consuming these products could pose a risk to public health,” an FDA official stated.
The consignment was seized during a surprise inspection, and a destruction order was promptly executed on-site to prevent any possibility of the products reaching consumers.
The FDA has also initiated further investigation into the source of the consignment and the individuals involved in its distribution, with possible penalties and legal action under relevant food safety laws.
Authorities have urged retailers and distributors to strictly adhere to food storage regulations and warned of strict action against violators in the interest of public health.
