MARGAO: In a swift action following a complaint, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) seized and disposed of approximately 600 improperly sealed packets of chicken in Margao, valued at around Rs 3 lakh.
The FDA’s South Goa officials acted on a tip-off about a vehicle from Hubballi transporting the chicken to Margao under improper storage conditions and without the mandatory label declarations. The vehicle reportedly unloaded the stock at a location opposite the KTC bus stand near Madel.
During the inspection, FDA officials discovered that the pickup vehicle was inadequately insulated and that the chicken packets were stored in unhygienic conditions. Moreover, the chicken packets lacked proper labelling, and there were no valid purchase bills or an FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) license associated with the stock.
The site where the stock was offloaded also lacked an FSSAI license and was identified as a facility dealing with the sales and servicing of radiators, AC condensers, fan motors, and oil coolers, which is not approved for food storage or distribution.
The inspection found around 600 packets of chicken, each containing two kilograms, with an individual packet worth Rs 500. The entire consignment, valued at approximately Rs 3 lakh, was disposed of to ensure public health safety, with the assistance of the Margao Municipal Council.
