CANACONA: Canacona police have recovered the body of an 80-year-old woman who had been reported missing earlier this month, with the body found in a decomposed condition during a combing operation in the Agonda area.
According to police sources, on January 17, 2026, at around 12.56 pm, Canacona Police Station received information from PSI Babu Dessai that a missing woman, identified as Kalpna Naik Gaonkar, aged 80 years and a resident of Agonda, Canacona, had been found dead at Karashirmol, Agonda. A missing person report in her regard had been registered at Canacona Police Station on January 9, 2026.
Police said the body was found in an advanced stage of decomposition while a combing operation was being carried out in the Agonda area. Following the information, police visited the spot and conducted a scene of occurrence panchanama and an inquest panchanama over the body.
The body was thereafter referred for post-mortem examination at the South Goa District Hospital (SGDH), Margao. The police surgeon who conducted the autopsy opined that due to the advanced stage of decomposition, no definite opinion regarding the cause of death could be given. Viscera were preserved for chemical analysis, while materials of evidential value were preserved for serological examination. Bone and tooth samples were also preserved for DNA profiling.
After completion of medico-legal formalities, the body was handed over to the family members for final religious rites.
Police said further enquiry in the case is in progress and is being conducted by PSI Ajit Velip of Canacona Police Station.
