COLVALE: A female police constable was reportedly assaulted by a female inmate at Colvale Jail on Monday evening. However, by late that night, the prison administration had yet to file a complaint with the Colvale police regarding the incident.
Sources indicate that the prison is currently lacking a female warden, and instead, female police constables, home guards, and GHRDC security personnel are tasked with managing the Central Jail. According to reports, the altercation began with a disagreement between the prisoner and the constable, which escalated into a physical confrontation, resulting in the assault.
Upon learning of the incident, Colvale police dispatched a team to the prison to investigate. However, no official complaint was made by either the prison administration or the assaulted police constable at that time.
The issue of understaffing has also come to light, particularly with regard to female wardens. Two of the four female wardens at the facility have been promoted to Assistant Superintendents, while the remaining two have retired. Alarmingly, the prison has not recruited female wardens in the past two decades, and male wardens have not been hired since 2012.
This shortage of both female and male wardens has led to a reliance on police officers, home guards, and security guards to fill in for essential prison staff. Sources have pointed out that this situation compromises the proper functioning of the facility and poses risks to both staff and inmates.
