CHORAO: In a serious lapse of operational oversight, a ferryboat anchored at Chorao Island sank in the early hours of Monday before it could begin its daily service. Though no passengers were aboard at the time, the incident has raised grave concerns over ferry safety and governance.
Authorities confirmed that the vessel submerged while moored at the shore, with no injuries reported. Initial findings by the River Navigation Department (RND) suggest that accumulated rainwater in a tank caused the vessel to sink, allegedly due to the coxswain’s failure to clear it in time. Officials ruled out any structural damage to the boat.
The incident has prompted the government to order a full-fledged inquiry into the cause and accountability. Recovery efforts are currently underway.
The mishap triggered immediate political backlash, with Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Amit Patkar terming the incident as “criminal negligence” and demanding the sacking of the Captain of Ports.
“The sinking of the ferry reflects the BJP government’s utter disregard for public safety. Heads must roll,” Patkar said.
Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao also came down heavily on the administration. “This is not just a mechanical failure; it exposes the collapse of the monitoring system within the River Navigation Department. Accountability must be fixed,” he stated, while calling for a thorough and transparent probe.
The ferry, a vital mode of transport for island residents, remains out of service as authorities inspect the extent of damage and plan restoration measures.
