PANAJI: The much-awaited inspection of the Mhadei River basin by the Progressive River Authority for Welfare and Harmony (PRAWAH) is scheduled to begin on July 4.
The inspection will begin in Maharashtra and continue to Goa for a comprehensive examination on July 5 and 6. The committee will next move on to the state of Karnataka.
“This is the first visit,” said Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar, highlighting the importance of the first visit. After that, they will likely receive visits on a monthly or fortnightly basis. This visit is important because it will make them aware of how the water flows when it rains.
Following reports that Karnataka had started excavating canals to divert water to the Malaprabha basin, the Goa government requested a joint inspection, which is why PRAWAH decided to inspect the Mhadei basin.
Visits to lift irrigation projects around Maharashtra and Karnataka are part of the inspection schedule.
The committee will also check the Anjunem and Amthane dams, as well as the Surla and Dhudsagar waterfalls. They will also assess the Valvanthi River, which provides drinking water facilities and boosts irrigation initiatives.
“Goa, Maharashtra, and Karnataka chief engineers, as well as our engineers, will be on the inspection team,” Shirodkar continued.
On July 7, the committee is also expected to visit the crucial locations in Bhandura and Khalsa.
The Goa government has petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn the inter-state water dispute tribunal’s ruling on sharing the river water due to the ongoing dispute between Goa and Karnataka over the diversion of the Mhadei River’s water.
