Sanvordem: A major disaster was narrowly averted this afternoon at the House of Petroleum fuel station in Sanvordem after a generator caught fire, reportedly due to a battery short circuit. The generator was situated alarmingly close to the underground petrol storage tank, raising fears of a potential explosion.
Thanks to the swift and efficient response by the Curchorem Fire Brigade, the fire was brought under control before it could reach the fuel reserves. Fire officials confirmed that, had the blaze spread to the underground tank, the resulting explosion could have impacted an area within a 1-kilometre radius.
The Curchorem Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire and are currently assessing the safety compliance measures at the petrol pump. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in the incident.
