MORMUGAO: A fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday at the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Sunday Market, destroying two shops completely and partially damaging two others. Firefighters from the Vasco Fire Station, along with the electricity department, responded swiftly and managed to contain the blaze before it could spread further in the congested market area. Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar also rushed to the spot upon information to oversee all the fire fighting operations to control the fire and prevent it from spreading to other shops in the dense market.
Vasco Fire Officer Dilip Bicholkar confirmed that they received the distress call at 3:40 AM and rushed to the site immediately.
“When we arrived, we found three shops engulfed in flames. We immediately called for additional fire tenders and began firefighting operations to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent shops. The market is densely packed, making it vulnerable to rapid fire spread,” said Bicholkar.
He estimated the loss at around ₹10 lakh but noted that their quick response helped save property worth over ₹1 crore.
“We believe the fire may have started around midnight, but we were only informed at 3:40 AM. We urge shopkeepers to install small fire hydrants or extinguishers, as immediate action can prevent major damage,” he added.
MLA Krishna Salkar Assures Assistance
Upon receiving the news, Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar rushed to the site to oversee the firefighting operations. He praised the fire brigade and electricity department for their prompt action, which prevented a major disaster.
“It is heartbreaking to see shops reduced to ashes. However, a much bigger tragedy has been averted. Given how congested the market is, the fire could have spread and caused severe damage,” said Salkar.
He urged shopkeepers to adopt safety measures such as installing fire extinguishers and appointing a watchman for security.
“I have spoken to the market vendors, and they have agreed to hire a security guard who can alert authorities immediately in case of an emergency. I will also discuss safety measures with the MMC Chief Officer for the benefit of shopkeepers,” he assured.
Salkar also promised financial assistance to the affected shop owners.
“I will ensure they receive help from the government, and I am personally willing to support them so they can restart their businesses soon,” he stated.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Authorities are urging all shopkeepers to implement fire safety measures to prevent future incidents.
