Health Minister Vishwajit Rane has reassured consumers that fish sold in Goa markets is completely safe for consumption, as the state government has implemented a robust 24-hour quality monitoring system.
Speaking to reporters, Rane said that every consignment of fish arriving in the state undergoes systematic checks to ensure it is free of harmful chemicals. He emphasized that people should not harbor doubts about the safety of local fish, as stringent protocols are in place.
“Goa’s fish is safe. There is no need for people to panic or be misled by rumours. The Health Department has set up a system where fish is tested around the clock. Any vehicle carrying fish is subject to inspection, and samples are collected for laboratory analysis,” Rane stated.
The minister explained that dedicated teams conduct inspections at multiple entry points to the state, including the border check posts. The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) and Health Department are coordinating efforts to maintain consistent quality standards.
Rane further clarified that test results are continuously reviewed, and the authorities are empowered to take immediate action if any contamination is detected. He said the government remains committed to protecting public health and that any violators found supplying contaminated fish would face strict legal action.
The assurance comes amid occasional reports and speculation about the use of chemicals such as formalin to preserve fish transported into Goa. In recent years, such concerns have sparked widespread anxiety among consumers and affected the local fish trade.
However, Rane insisted that the monitoring mechanism has been significantly strengthened. He urged citizens to trust the official testing process rather than rely on unverified information.
“The government is fully vigilant. All measures are in place to ensure fish reaching the market is safe. People should have confidence in the testing system and not fall prey to rumours,” he said.
