CANACONA: Alarmed by the threat of environmental disaster, the Akhil Goa Kshatriya Pagui Samaj (AGKPS) has petitioned the Canacona Deputy Collector to immediately dismantle and safely remove a dangerously tilted tank believed to be filled with toxic molasses or chemical waste at the Canacona Industrial Estate. The tank, previously owned by Penguin Alcohol, is reportedly in a dilapidated condition and poses a severe risk to marine life and the livelihood of local fishermen.
A memorandum submitted on Thursday by AGKPS president Diwakar Pagui and other members to Deputy Collector Prataprao Gaunkar warned that the tank, if it bursts, could release its contents into nearby water bodies, especially during heavy rains. This could result in poisonous runoff entering the local river systems and eventually polluting the sea, causing catastrophic harm to marine ecosystems and affecting the fishing-dependent communities in the area.
“The tank is visibly tilted and looks structurally unstable. The liquid inside, believed to be chemically hazardous, could flow into the water bodies with rainwater and destroy the marine environment,” said the AGKPS in its petition.
The group stressed that many of its members are registered fishermen operating in the Canacona beach zone, whose livelihoods would be directly impacted by such a spill.
The AGKPS urged the authorities to act swiftly and responsibly by dismantling the tank and safely disposing of its contents at an appropriate facility before any environmental calamity unfolds.
