VASCO: A fire that broke out at the Bouter jetty in Vasco reduced several fishing nets to ashes, causing an estimated loss of around ₹12 lakh and leaving the affected fisherman staring at a major setback ahead of the fishing season.
According to available information, the blaze erupted at the jetty where fishing nets had been stored after routine operations. Within a short span of time, the flames spread rapidly, completely gutting the nets before any effective intervention could be mounted. By the time the fire was brought under control, the equipment had been entirely destroyed.
The owner of the damaged nets has expressed strong suspicion of foul play behind the incident. He alleged that the area around the jetty is often frequented by miscreants, particularly during late hours, for partying and consumption of alcohol. He believes that careless or deliberate acts by such elements may have triggered the fire, resulting in heavy financial losses.
The incident has sparked concern among the local fishing community, which relies heavily on costly nets and gear for their livelihood. Fishermen have pointed out that the destruction of nets not only causes immediate monetary loss but also disrupts fishing activity for weeks, impacting income and household sustenance.
Following the incident, the net owner has demanded a thorough investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the fire and to fix responsibility if any foul play is established. He has also urged the authorities to strengthen security arrangements at the jetty, including regular patrols and monitoring, to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Local sources said the matter is likely to be reported to the police for further inquiry. Meanwhile, fishermen operating from the Bouter jetty have reiterated the need for better protection of infrastructure and equipment, warning that repeated such incidents could severely affect the traditional fishing community in Vasco.
